1-Day Acuvue TruEye 90 Pack Nara A

By John Dick, ABO, FNAO

1 Day Acuvue TruEye daily disposable contacts are the latest in several generations of hydrogels designed to provide for advantages to the patients: enhanced comfort, better vision, preventative care, and ongoing maintenance of good ocular health. This is the first daily disposable silicone hydrogel introduced to the market. With a combination of Hydraclearâ„¢ technology and Narafilcon B, they provide an oxygen transmissibility level of nearly 100%, a smooth, hydrophilic surface for better wettability, better retention of moisture, and protection against harmful UV rays that may damage the eye. There has never been a soft daily disposable lens capable of providing these qualities in every facet of contact lens wear.

Hydraclearâ„¢ technology is a proprietary formula designed by Johnson & Johnson to combat the problems associated with protein deposits and discomfort caused by extended wear. With previous soft lenses protein buildup was always a concern. Long strands of proteins would combine creating deposits on the surface of the contacts. These deposits in turn would cause discomfort and may even warp the cornea inducing irregular astigmatism. The proprietary formulation developed by Johnson & Johnson provides such an extremely viscous surface which makes it nearly impossible for the adherence of these strands. In addition to preventing protein buildup, this extremely smooth surface allows enhanced comfort to the patient providing a more natural feel.

Ultraviolet radiation is another concern not only for contact lens patients, but every patient. It has been well documented UVA and UVB rays are absorbed by ocular tissues and can cause considerable damage to cellular structures. Without protection, UVA and UVB rays will be transmitted through the cornea and aqueous of the eye and nearly totally absorbed by the crystalline lens. It’s believed this absorption of UV alters the nuclear proteins in the lens causing them to become opaque. This is known as a cataract. In addition to cataracts, the absorption has also been known to cause different types of skin cancer to develop in the ocular tissue. 1-Day Acuvue TruEye lenses block out nearly 100% of these harmful rays preventing problems associated with UV absorption.

In large part, corneal health is maintained through an adequate supply of moisture and oxygen. When the eye is not properly oxygenated, it will initiate an autoimmune response in the form of a condition known as corneal neovascularization. The eye attempts to correct a deprivation of oxygen through growing new blood vessels to the area. These blood vessels carry with them the oxygen and nutrients needed to nourish this deprived area. If this new ingrowth of blood vessels should encroach on the visual axis, the pathway light travels to allow vision to occur, it will compromise visual acuity. 1 Day Acuvue TruEye lenses are designed to bring nearly 100% of available oxygen to the eye preventing this sight threatening complication. Since these lenses are hydrogels, the polymer will allow the contact to absorb moisture and retain it. In maintaining the corneal tear film, the eye is more comfortable and less prone to develop infections or allergic responses.
