Acuvue Oasys lenses manufactured by Vistakon are a truly ground breaking with respect to comfort, maintaining ocular health and the prevention of common conditions associated with contact lens wear. Several studies have been conducted providing conclusive evidence these lenses outperform Air Optix Aqua lenses on two important fronts: oxygen transmissibility and moisture. This translates to better vision and comfort for the patient while assisting the corneal tear film in keeping the transparent medium of the cornea healthy. In addition to a high-performing lens, Acuvue Oasys contacts are treated with the Hydraclear formulation designed to increase the wettability and comfort of the lens.
Acuvue Oasys lenses are comprised of the proprietary silicon hydrogel material senofilcon A. Senofilcon A is the smoothest material available for use with contact lenses. Additionally, when wetted by the patient’s natural tears this material allows these tears to spread more evenly across the surface of the lens as compared to Air Optix Aqua lenses which are made of a more traditional silicon hydrogel technology.
Senofilcon A allows the transmission of 98% of available oxygen to the corneal surface as well as blocking 100% of harmful UV rays that damage ocular tissues. Due to the unique properties of Senofilcon A, this material is considerably more flexible than traditional hydrogels; the patient enjoys a wider range of comfort. The surface of Acuvue Oasys lenses are subjected to a bombardment of electrically excited molecules that fuse with the lens matrix and create an extremely slick surface providing the patient with comfort, but at the same time decreasing the susceptibility of the contact to protein deposits, bacteria and allergens. This process does not coat the lens, but rather becomes a part of it. The surface will never flake or peel away effectively becoming part of the lens itself.
Over 1700 patients participated in an extensive study by Vistakon comparing Acuvue Oasys and the Senofilcon A material to conventional hydrogel lenses. The participation of these patients was based on sex, age, degree of correction, environments and ocular history. Patients who wore contacts in challenging environments such as extensive computer use, extreme temperature settings, windy areas, etc. and who exhibited a history of discomfort and complications were given special consideration. It was determined after two weeks of wear, patients wearing the senofilcon A lenses (Acuvue Oasys) in these environments, were not only more comfortable in these lenses, but in many cases their symptoms went away altogether (Review of Optometry 2010).
Two-week lenses, such as Acuvue Oasys make up nearly 60% of the silicone hydrogel planned replacement contact market. Of all brands, Acuvue Oasys is the most prescribed for new contact lens wearers (Review of Optometry 2010).
Acuvue Oasys has demonstrated the ability to perform. In a face paced world, this ability to perform well under adverse conditions appeals to doctors and patients alike. Patients do not want to be concerned with the development of contact lens complications and doctors do not want to see their patients suffer from these problems. This is why Acuvue Oasys fills a particular niche. It’s the lens you can wear and not have to think about because of its unique properties and health advantages.
